Create Your Own Kegerator
There are a few things a true beer lover should not have to do without and one of the most significant ones is to have a cold one when the mood strikes. There are 2 ways to ensure that you never have to suffer this fate. One way is to keep going to the store and purchasing case after case of beer or you might want to buckle down and decide to make your very own kegerator. A fullsize keg holds roughly one hundred and sixty five beers which should save you many visits to the store to replinish your diminishing beer stock.
Buying a kegerator is a viable option for some people but other folks prefer to save some money and have a nice kegerator they can customize and say they built with their own hands. You may even be surprised to hear that it’s not all that difficult to do and will only cost you around two hundred dollars. Things you need:
- Refrigerator
- Kegerator conversion kit
- CO2 cylinder
- One and three eighth inch hole saw
- seven eighth inch hole saw
- Hacksaw
- A keg of beer
Now given that you have all the above items, it’s time to begin the installing process. The first point of order is to determine where you may install the tap. Be certain to put it low enough so that freezer door can be opened without hitting the handle of the tap. Drill the quarter inch pilot hole through the whole door. Next, make a hole with a one and three eighth hole saw just through the outer part of the door and the 0.25″ hole saw through the inner part of the door. After you’ve found out the thickness of the door, saw the PVC pipe to the chosen length and insert it between the holes.
Next install the tap by attaching the tap to the shank and slowly tighten with a wrench. Insert your shank into the PVC pipe and tighten with the shank nut. Now put the loose clamp on the hose before attaching to the shank. Push the beer hose into the other side of the shank and tighten the clamp. Insert a rubber washer into the end of the beer hose and fasten the nut onto the top part of the keg coupler. The drip tray should be placed about 1 foot below the tap by placing screws into the door for it to hang.
At this point you will need to add a clamp on the gas hose and tighten it on the thin end of the coupler and clamp down. Place another clamp on the other end and fasten that to the thin end of your CO2 regulator and tighten. Take the regulator and attach the end with a nut on it to the CO2 cylinder and fasten. Be certain to not make it too tight because you’ll want to remove it for re-filling the canister. Insert your coupler into the keg, handle pointing up and rotate the coupler until it stops. Pull out the handle and push down hard on it until you hear it snap below the hatch. Now open the regulator valve by pointing it parallel with the hose. Open the valve on top of the tank and turn the regulator till it reaches 10 psi. The 1st couple of glasses sometimes has a lot foam but the 3rd will be nearer to what you want. By tweeking the regulator a bit, you can attain the specified amount of gas you need with each beer.
