How Does Hard Disks Read And Write Data And How To Permanently Destroy A Broken Disk
A hard disk is magnetic disk that stores computer data. It is one of the largest storage device inside the computer. It reads and writes data through the use of magnetically coated platters.
Parts of A Hard Disk
Before we learn how hard disks read and write files, we must learn what things are responsible for that.
- Platters
Platters are where files are read and written. A hard disk drive can have one or more platters. These platters are made up of either glass or aluminum. Modern disks use glass platters for it is more sturdy, can be made thinner compared to aluminum, and can endure heat.
- Read-write Head
The read/write head transmits data to the platters. For multiple platters, each of the platters have its own read/write head. The heads are attached in an actuator arm and is mounted in the actuator axis which makes it move.
- Actuator
The actuator decides the movement of the actuator. To prevent friction, magnets are attached on opposing sides, 1 on the top and one in the bottom. A voice coil attracts or repels the magnets to move and keep it balance.
- Voice Coil
Voice coil position the heads. It parks when hard disks are turned off and moves when it’s turned on.
- Micro Controller Unit (MCU)
The Micro Controller Unit (MCU) is the disks processor. It does all the calculations inside the disk. It transposes digital signal into analog when it writes and analog signals into digital when it reads. The MCU is located the Hard Disk’s circuit board. It is commonly the biggest circuit chip in the circuit board.
The platter is the one that stores all the files. With that, when a disk is broken, it can be transferred from one disk to another particularly when the hard disk to be transferred to is of the same make and model.
How to destroy data on a broken disk permanently?
When a hard disk is breaking down, we might confront problems like the OS won’t boot, our computer intensely slacken from time to time even after a fresh install of an operating system, or we hear clicking sounds.
On such condition, our normal quick fix is to follow advise of several technicians like dropping it on a sofa or freezing it overnight. But these solutions are only temporary. When a disk fails, especially when it has clicking sounds, we can never return it to the way it was. When all things fail, we throw these disks away .Before throwing it, these are some of the files you have to look out for:
- Your pictures
- saved passwords
- social security number, credit card numbers, bank account number saved in a text editor.
- personal address
- other personal information(ex. Your birthday, billing address, office address, name of office/company).
- Client lists with address and phone number
When you have at least one, physically destroy the drive.
Now we know what parts are responsible for storing files, we must destroy the most critical part inside the disk: the platters. To destroy platters:
- Open your broken disk by unscrewing the screws using a torx screwdriver.
- Remove the lid, the first thing you’ll see is a shiny,mirror like disk, this is the platter. Destroy it.
To destroy the platter we can:
pound it with a hammer until its crushed
use a drill to create holes in it.
Burn until it melts
saw it in half
Or if you have several disks or you don’t have the time to destroy it yourself you can send your disks to hard drive destruction companies. These companies permanently make disks unuable by either shredding or degaussing .
You can use a company such as PC Recycle if you need a hard disk destruction compliant with government standards.
The beauty of technology is it makes life uncomplicated. Before we see file cabinets, piles and piles of papers scattered everywhere. Now, we won’t see any of these lest we want a hard copy.
But with that, it also has a price. We can save thousands of files in a single hard disk, therefore, thousands of files are at in danger. If this drive falls into the wrong hands, many will be compromised like what happened with Heartland Payment Systems occurred on 2009 in which more than 250,000 names, credit and debit card numbers were compromised because a malicious software got injected in their system and the National Archives and Administration reported for a possible data breach when they sent a broken hard drive, a part of a RAID array, for repair but failed to wipe the data on disk which calculated that it contains comprehensive records of 76 million veterans dating from 1972.
If this occurred on companies that know about such breach, then even normal citizens can become a victim if we neglect to do the precautionary measures before throwing away a drive, similar event will also happen to you.
