How To Select A Pressure Sensors

Pressure transducers are found in numerous applications, and they are used widely in process control and pumping systems. Pressure sensors are commonly used as a feedback source for PID controllers which provide the error signal in a closed loop control system to regulate the pressure.

It is important that the pressure sensor is compatible with your application. The following characteristics should be considered.

Isolation: The transducer may need to be isolated from the medium being measured. For corrosive, high-temperature, or viscous media, isolation is commonly required. Frequently, a metal or ceramic diaphragm, and sometimes a fill fluid, isincorporated in the sensor.

Accuracy: High accuracy devices have improved performance with temperature and time.

Pressure range: Commonly available ranges exist from vacuum to very high pressure, with vacuum, gauge, absolute, ordifferential pressure references. When selecting a sensor’s range, it is desirable for the application’s normal operating pressure to be 50-90 % of the range chosen. Differential transducers have two inputs and the transducer indicates the pressure difference between the two inputs,absolute sensors indicate the pressure relative to an absolute vacuum, and guage transducers indicate the pressure relative to the atmospheric pressure.

Temperature: Care msut be taken in installations where the monitored medium can freeze. This is particularly important in pumping installations in colder environments.

Vibration: Some installations are on machinery that can subject the transducer to high levels of vibration and shock loading. This can be damaging to some transducers.

Hydraulic Control Systems can generate severe hydraulic transients that can damage some transducers. Use a snubber device, or a high overload transducer.

Outputs: sensor outputs are available in industry-standard, millivolt, voltage, or current signals. Digital outputs with communication capability are available as well. The passive 4-20 mA output is the simplest since it is a two-wire connection.  A voltage output is a three wire connection and is more easy to wire incorrectly. 4-20 mA circuits are more noise imune that voltage circuits so should be used in preference to voltage outputs where there is elecrical noise.

Connections: The thread or socket of the pressure transducer must match the equipment to which it is connected.
