Emergency Preparedness: 9 Things to Have In Your Car or Truck at All Times
Breaking down in the middle of nowhere — especially on a cold, stormy night — is not fun. If you are having car trouble in a remote area, it could take some time before a helpful driver comes your way.
Whether it is a long or short trip, here are 9 things that you should have in your car or truck at all times. Hopefully, you will not need them. In the event you have car trouble, you will be very glad that you were prepared.
- A fully charged cellphone so you can call for help – or let your family or friends know that you are having trouble.
- Jumper cables in case your battery goes dead, or you meet someone one the road that needs a jump.
- Normally, your vehicle will be equiped with a spare tire and jack. Be sure your spare tire is properly inflated.
- A flash light and, if possible, a flare. Obviously, you might need to look under the hood at night time. You can use this light to alert other drivers that you’re having an emergency.
- Always carry at least a gallon of potable water. You can get dehydrated during the winter time, too.
- A warm thermal blanket and dry matches that you can use to start a campfire may be critical during bad weather.
- A map will always come in handy in case you get lost. It can also help identify your location if you need to call for help.
- Basic tools such as a wrench, screw drivers and so forth may come in handy. A roll of duct tape might be helpful, too!
- A proper gasoline storage cannister is a good thing to have in case you need to haul some gas to your stranded vehicle.
Portable automotive emergency stations are very useful. These units are often equiped with a battery booster, a tire inflator and a powerful light. You need to be sure to keep these units fully charged. Most of them can be recharged with an AC plugin or with a DC plugin that works with your cigarette lighter. While they are handy to have, these portable units will not do you much good if you break down in a remote location and discover that the battery is dead.
