Birth Control: A Guide
If you are about to start a sexual relationship for the first time or you are already involved in a sexual relationship but aren’t familiar with all of the types of contraception that are available, this document can be used as a handy and informative guide. The right form of contraceptives can help to ensure your safety and prevent unwanted pregnancies. The most common types that are available are as follows:
Condoms
A popular choice when it comes to staying safe, condoms are normally made of latex and function as a barrier between two partners throughout intercourse. They help to comprehensively reduce the risk of contracting an STI (sexually transmitted infection) and when being used regularly there is only a very slender possibility of the condom splitting, which could in some instances result in pregnancy. They have elastic properties and are waterproof and durable. Condoms come in a number of different guises including ultra thin, flavoured, ribbed and dotted. They can be utilised for penetrative intercourse as well as for oral pleasures. Female condoms are also available.
The Contraceptive Pill
Also known as COCP (the combined oral contraceptive pill), the contraceptive pill or the pill for short is a type of contraception that uses a combination of hormones to prohibit fertility when taken daily. Although not a method of stopping the dissemination of STIs, the pill can regulate and in many instances lighten periods and is believed to reduce the risk of cancer of the ovaries. However, if the contraceptive pill is not remembered to be taken, this can lead to pregnancy. The mini-pill (POP) can also be taken orally and is advised for those who should not use the full pill – for instance, older women, those suffering from diabetes and women whose blood pressure has risen on the pill.
Contraceptive Coils
Contraceptive coils (or intrauterine devices – IUDs) are generally used by young women who have had babies. Going inside the womb, the contraceptive coil is only the height of a match and helps to inhibit pregnancy by stopping sperm from going beyond the womb and into the tubes, making the lining of the womb less able to accept an egg and altering fluids in the cervix therefore creating an additional barrier for sperm. Even though they don’t prohibit STIs, they have a 98% effectiveness rate when it comes to birth control. The only notable drawback is that periods could become heavier.
Contraceptive Injection
Lasting for about three months, the contraceptive injection (usually injected into a muscle in the backside) contains hormones to help act against pregnancy turning into a reality by preventing ovulating. The good thing about having this injection is that unlike the pill you don’t have to remember to keep taking it. However, it does not inhibit the transfer of STIs and is not recommended for use by females who suffer from migraines.
Skin Patch
Only used by approximately 1% of females, the skin patch, also known as Evra, is an effective external form of the contraceptive pill which you stick onto the surface of the skin and functions by releasing hormones that stop you from getting pregnant. As with the majority of contraceptive methods this self-adhesive patch (which must be replaced every seven days) does come with potential side effects including nausea, headaches and symptoms that are similar to flu. This contraceptive doesn’t act as a barrier to STIs.
Withdrawal Method
Used by approximately 4per cent of the population, the withdrawal method is usually used by young couples or by people who do not use normal contraceptive methods. It involves the male partner pulling out before ejaculation. This technique is considerably more risky than traditional types of birth control if withdrawal isn’t done early enough and it does not guard against the spread of STIs. However, this method is better than not doing anything at all.
Whatever method of contraception you may wish to explore, it’s always best to discuss it with your other half and have a conversation with your doctor first to ensure that you’re familiar with all of the possible side effects.
