Specialty Pieces for Wellhead Components
The distribution system of an oil and gas well is dependent on the structure and design of the wellhead components and the point in time in which the wellhead is being utilized. All of the components that make up the wellhead must work together for the safe operation of the well and to ensure continuous operation of the system. Wellhead components can be connected to wellheads that are place either on the ground or underwater in what are called mudline wellheads. When properly constructed and put together a wellhead should operate for years with very little maintenance or repair work being done on it.
The functions of a wellhead or numerous and serve many purposes during the life of an oil and gas well. Holding casing in place during the drilling portion of well construction is the first thing that a wellhead does. When the drilling phase is complete tubing can be installed through the wellhead to seal the well and help to control the pressure. The wellhead components work together allowing a means of extracting the fluids as well as allowing for blowout preventers to be used during drilling and Christmas trees during production. The two functions of a wellhead include access to the well as well as a way to attach a pump.
There are a number of components that make up the wellhead and these wellhead components include the casing head, spools and hangers. Tubing adapters, hangers and tubing heads as well as packoff and isolation seals/bowl protectors and test plugs make up a portion of the different types of wellhead components. Chokes, acutators and gate valves also make up a portion of the wellhead. Each of these is put together with metal to metal seals and in some instances gas metals arc welding is used in the process to produce a better seal and more effective production of each unit.
Sealing the annular space of casings as well as supporting the technical weight of oil string casing occurs during the connection of casings to the wellheads. It can also provide a way to transition to the tubing head, Christmas tree or other wellheads. When needed cement can be delivered through the wellhead as well as any balancing liquids can be provided to the well as needed through the two outlet ports. Almost all wellheads are designed for the project based on standard sizes but may be custom built as needed.
The base structure and design of Gas Metals and the resulting wellhead have been developed through years of testing. While most of the components can be used on any standard job, some manufacturers have developed specific designs to be used for different jobs. Standard design makes it easier for manufacturers to produce the perfect piece before construction even begins. This standard design makes repairs easier to accomplish when a wellhead component fails in the field.
